Maintained systems can be on all the time from a dedicated supply and switch to back-up power when the power fails for three hours of illumination.  These are required in places of entertainment and licensed premises

Non-Maintained systems only operate when the power fails and are ideal for use in buildings with limited occupation time such as offices or shops
